Minton Tile Restoration, West Yorkshire

This is part 1 of a Minton tile restoration carried out in Huddersfield West Yorks. This floor was typical of the large villa style houses in the area - a large floor with a particular nice example of a relatively simple design within the field tiles with an ornate border.

The floor was loose in the centre with one end of the floor suffering from a DIY repair, carried out some time in the past. The floor was manufactured by the Minton Hollins tile company so it is actually a Minton floor! - floors of this design are often referred to as Minton floors but are often made by other manufacturers. We uplifted sections of the floor and laid it again using spare tiles from when a mat well was installed, again at some point in the past. Most tiles were loose enough to be uplifted and simply laid again once space had been created for the adhesive.

The DIY repair was obvious as with most rushed repairs the tiles were portruding at various heights and angles. The culprit never thinks about the space required to set the tile back into the floor - adhesive requires space!. We uplifted the tiles and set them back into the floor so the tiles were now level with the rest of the floor.

Once all the work was complete the floor was cleaned and sealed to protect against staining. We have also had some of the encaustic border tiles made to complete a repair to a damaged section at the foot of the stairs - will update when completed.
