Victorian Minton floor tile restoration.

Victorian Minton floor tile restoration.

Victorian dust pressed geometric & encaustic tiled floors are not the easiest floor to restore, time and patience being key elements in there restoration not to mention a strong set of knees! Time on site can range from days to weeks with some work being carried out off site. The damage is often the same thing being seen time and time again, collapsing doorways, cracks, loose tiles, buried pipe runs and 130 years of grime. It's well worth restoring almost any of these old floors, they really are the centrepiece in any Victorian era building.

The name Minton is synonymous with this particular style of floor but there were other important manufacturers like Maw and Co, Craven Dunnills, Burmantofts and Godwins to name a few, we have probably worked on them all. If you scroll down to the very bottom left of the screen under 'All News' there are a few projects we have worked on recently, have look through them there is a little bit more information on how the work is carried out.

Victorian and Edwardian tiled floors were 'fixed' using a method known as monolithic fixing, the tiles were laid almost edge to edge and then beaten into the lime or later portland cement. Its debatable whether replacing larger sections or individual tiles is harder or easier. Most are essentially floating floors with the tiles themselves holding the floor together in the horizontal rather than being bonded to the substrate. Once a few tiles are out they can start to fall apart fairly rapidly and its not unusual to be able to be able to uplift a whole floor just with a flat scraper.

Our company supplies both reclaimed tiles and authentic reproduction tiles for our projects - encaustic tiles can be made specifically for your floor if an original cannot be sourced. This is normally at a fraction of the cost associated with this particular kind of tile and somewhere a reasonable amount of money can be saved.

I hope the info on the page is of interest and of use - we do not mind taking on small or large floors - all are of interest, we are often asked to just clean up a dull looking floor which are more than happy to do.
